A Smart Home for a Good Boy
Percepto recently announced the launch of a smart home for Boston Dynamics’ Spot. Dubbed Percepto Base for Spot, it marks the first time that a smart home has been developed as a solution to aid a robot’s functionality as well as to ensure its protection from theft and weather.
Smart Data Collection and Surveillance
Percepto’s autonomous inspection and monitoring (AIM) platform is responsible for collecting and analyzing high-quality data on an area of interest. Serving as a remote operational center, it allows staff members to request information on specific areas and automatically assign surveillance/inspection tasks to integrated robots. These tasks can be performed by Percepto Sparrow Drone, which collects images or live-stream from a bird’s eye level, or Spot, which is deployed for ground-level inspections, especially in areas that are inaccessible or dangerous. AIM can also deploy Spot in case a closer look is necessary for the intel provided by Sparrow Drone.
The visual data is captured via 4K day vision cameras and night-vision cameras, and is live-streamed to AIM via secure 4G and 5G long term evolution (LTE) connections. Once collected, all data is uploaded to a cloud management system where AIM can then analyze the information, compare it to previous data and generate reports if needed.
Percepto offers autonomous drones as solutions for surveillance and inspections across a variety of terrains. Its AI-powered drones are equipped with features like vehicle and people detection, gas leakage detection, fire detection, 2D and 3D modeling capabilities and temperature monitoring. Percepto was founded in 2014 and has served numerous Fortune 500 companies like Enel and Verizon.

To Build A (Smart) Home
Once all necessary data has been collected, Spot can return to Base for Spot, which can be opened and closed by AIM without needing human interference or supervision. Base for Spot is comprised of the same hurricane-tested technology that was used to create Percepto’s drone-in-a-box, offering protection from extreme weather conditions like desert heat or winter storms.
“Percepto is proud to build upon our autonomous inspection offering that began with Sparrow, the most widely deployed drone-in-a-box in the world. The Base for Spot uses the same sophisticated and trusted AIM software to integrate remote autonomous inspections from the sky to the ground, inside and out, for a holistic and accurate picture in real-time,” said Percepto’s CEO and co-founder, Dor Abuhasira. “A team of inspection robots on site without the need for human supervision is the future of safer, more reliable inspection and we are excited to add further solutions to our offering.”
Base for Spot serves as Spot’s base of operation, where it can remain on standby until deployment to a new mission. While housed inside Base for Spot, the robot can re-charge while staying connected to AIM.
